Beyond the Fight – The Story of Ryo Ogura

Hello, I’m Ryo Ogura, and I’m proud to represent Japan in karate at the Deaflympics 2025 in Tokyo.

Karate has always been part of who I am.

It’s not only a sport, it’s a philosophy, a discipline, and a way to express balance between body and mind.

Origins – From Dragon Ball Z to the Dojo

When I was 4 years old, I loved Dragon Ball Z.

At home, I would copy the moves, the energy, the precision of the characters I admired.

That’s how my journey began through imagination and play.

Those early moments taught me something simple but powerful:

strength starts with curiosity.

Karate became my way to turn that childhood dream into discipline and focus.

Preparation – Kata and Kumite

Today, I train both kata (form and movement) and kumite (combat).

Kata helps me master the basic techniques — every motion must be precise, every breath controlled.

Kumite, on the other hand, challenges my speed, timing, and awareness.

I often practice alone, repeating the same sequences again and again.

It’s in these quiet moments that I grow stronger — not just as an athlete, but as a person.

The Deaflympics – Recognition and Unity

In Japan, many people still don’t know much about the Deaflympics.

That’s something I want to change.

I hope that the Deaflympics become more visible —

so that hearing people can see what Deaf athletes can achieve,

and so that Deaf athletes themselves can feel recognized and valued.

For me, the Deaflympics are not just about competition —

they are about visibility, equality, and pride.

Message – Keep Moving Forward

The Deaflympics are coming soon, and I’m truly excited to meet everyone there.

Congratulations to all the athletes — we’ve all worked hard to be here.

Let’s give our best, support one another, and show the world what Deaf athletes can do.

Karate has taught me one thing above all:

true strength comes from perseverance and unity.
