Innovating Accessible Face-to-Face Communication: Our Meeting with JDI

We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Japan Display Inc. (JDI) a leading company in advanced display technologies to discover their latest innovation: the Rælclear transparent display.

This technology enables new forms of face-to-face interaction, where transparency itself becomes a bridge for communication. The Rælclear screen allows a user and an interlocutor to see each other naturally, while displaying real-time subtitles or visual content directly on the glass surface.

During our exchange, we discussed how such technology could support inclusive communication experiences, especially for Deaf and hard-of-hearing users. For example, in a situation where one person signs and the other speaks, subtitles could appear on the transparent display allowing both participants to maintain direct eye contact while communicating seamlessly.

We also explored potential future applications combining sign-language avatars, real-time subtitles, and transparent displays, to make communication more natural and equitable in public or virtual environments such as reception counters, consultation spaces, or hybrid meetings.

At spokhand, our mission is to build technologies that respect and enhance the linguistic and cultural richness of sign languages. What JDI is developing resonates strongly with that vision: it’s not only about accessibility, but about creating genuine face-to-face inclusion.

We are deeply interested in gathering feedback from the Deaf community to understand how users perceive this kind of interface, what feels intuitive, what could be improved, and how such innovations can truly serve the needs of Deaf and hearing people alike.
